KUALA LUMPUR: The ultra-catchy children's song Baby Shark has become the world's first ever video to garner more than 10 billion views on YouTube.

Released in 2016, the video produced by South Korean educational company, Pinkfong, dethroned Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee from the top spot last November.

Aside from being the most-viewed video on YouTube for 15 consecutive months, Baby Shark was also certified 11-times multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The phenomenally popular ditty performed by Korean-American singer, Hope Segoine, has also expanded into other avenues including a Nickelodeon TV show, interactive games and a popular cereal, as well as a lucrative global merchandise licensing programme.

A movie titled Pinkfong & Baby Shark's Space Adventures was also released on Netflix in 2019.

In a press statement, Pinkfong CEO Min-Seok Kim said: "It has been a truly meaningful journey to witness how Baby Shark has connected people around the world and we can't wait to introduce Baby Shark's further adventures that will bring unparalleled experiences to even more fans everywhere."

The company recently also set a record for its Spanish YouTube channel, Pinkfong Spanish, which received the Diamond Creator Award for having 10 million followers.

Pinkfong's English and Korean YouTube channels are recipients of the Diamond Creator Award as well.

Offering more than 5,000 songs and stories in 20 languages, the influential children's educational brand has 90 million subscribers with 50 billion views globally across its various YouTube channels.
