KUALA LUMPUR: The phenomenal popularity of Netflix series Squid Game has inspired Chinese streaming site Youku to come up with its own version, unsuccessfully.

Entertainment portal 8 Days reported yesterday that Youku announced the launch of its latest variety show Squid's Victory but Netizens called them out for their poster which looked almost similar to that of Squid Game.

They also urged Squid's Victory's producers to reconsider the title and poster design.

The plot of Squid's Victory is very similar to that of Squid Game, where contestants of the dramatic game face lots of serious challenges along their journeys.

But there is one major difference, those in Squid Games die whereas those in Squid's Victory live.

Netflix promptly said in a statement that there were "no discussions relating to Squid Game's copyright with Chinese companies" and Chinese social networking sites had blocked hashtags related to the show.

Youku subsequently apologised for its "work error" and claimed that the poster was a draft that had been rejected by its own creative team.

They also shared a new poster and announced that the show had been renamed as Game's Victory.
