From bags and scarves to shirts and dresses, lifestyle brand Nala Designs is now into shoes, writes Aznim Ruhana Md Yusup.

LIFESTYLE brand Nala Designs makes some of the most fetching patterns in Malaysia. Taking inspiration from vintage everyday items such as grilles and pastry moulds, founder Lisette Scheers transforms them into quirky, colourful designs.

Starting with bags and scarves, it then moved to shirts and dresses. It even released a baju kurung and modern cheongsam collection during Hari Raya and Chinese New Year.

But one thing that Nala does not do is footwear. So in comes Mel & Molly. The accessories label has taken three unique prints from Nala, turning them into slingback heels, espadrilles and flat sandals.

“Espadrilles is our bestselling shoe design and that’s why we have chosen it for this collaboration,” says Mel & Molly creative director Min Luna.

“The slingback has a two-inch heel and is very comfortable. The same goes with the sandal.”

The prints are Lily Lullaby, a floral pattern inspired by the intricate embroidery of Peranakan wedding gowns.

Pinafleur Bordeaux is influenced by antique diamond jewellery while the idea for Peacock Pride comes from the art deco facades of buildings in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

“The collaboration features some of my favourites,” says Scheers. “Peacock Pride is our first pattern and it’s appropriate considering it’s our 10th anniversary this year. I’m also impressed with the photoshoot that Mel & Molly did for the shoes. It’s absolutely magnificent.”

For customers, the best part of the collaboration is that the shoes come at Mel & Molly price points, which is lower than Nala’s.

Each pair is priced between RM139 and RM179 at FashionValet stores and website.
