If you're into vlogging or making home cafe videos, the Honor 50 has what it takes to do the job

LOOKING for a mid-range smartphone that does all the work, but doesn't break the bank? You may want to consider the all-new, stylish Honor 50. With its sleek, attractive design, lightweight and considerably good camera function, the Honor 50 is a good option.

Since breaking away from the Huawei brand, the new Honor smartphones have started using Google Services and new users have access to all the Android apps.

DESIGN

What I like about the Honor 50 is how slim and lightweight it is. It fits nicely in my pocket — no more bulky appearance.

Once powered up, the infinity display (6.57-inch 75-degree curved OLED display with a Full HD+) offers high-resolution (2340x1080) images. The images seem to pop out from the screen, even when the brightness is set to half the scale.

The bezel-less display significantly increases the viewing experience, especially when you're into gaming or simply watching videos on YouTube.

The phone comes in four colours: Frost Crystal, Emerald Green, Midnight Black and the limited edition Honor Code. The Honor Code gives a vibrant visual effect, seen on the back casing. The monogram design is smooth to the touch and when light touches the surface, it reflects the brand's wording like a coloured glass.

CAMERA

If you're into vlogging or making short home cafe videos for your Instagram Reels, you'll be impressed with the camera. The front camera (32MP) is perfect for selfies and videos — the image is clear and crisp.

If you're into photography and feel the need to leave the bulky camera at home, you can rely on the phone's quad camera setup. The pro-graded 108MP main camera, 8MP wide-angle camera, 2MP macro camera and 2MP depth camera allow for decent photos even in low light conditions.

I had the opportunity to test it out during a visit to the now-viralled location in Ipoh, the Kek Look Tong Cave Temple. As the name suggests, the picturesque temple is tucked inside a limestone cave. There are not many lighting fixtures inside the cave. Save for some moody decorative lights placed on the walls and floors of the cave. The only main source of lighting is the sun.

I also tried shooting using the normal mode (the pre-set camera setting) and Pro mode. While I have no issue with the pre-set mode, I find that the Pro mode is equally easy to handle as well. For some people, the Pro mode may be a little intimidating, especially when one is not used to shooting manually on a DSLR camera.

As much as I dislike the manual settings on a DSLR camera, I found myself gravitating towards the Pro mode setting on the phone's camera. With a quick change of the ISO and aperture, I took a couple of shots inside the cave. The images turn out clear even when zoomed in. The only complaint I have is the colours don't seem to pop out as much as what the eyes see.

If the photos turn out decent even indoors, the quality is exceptional outdoors, where natural lighting is aplenty.

The front camera turns out to be the best feature, where the colours seem to be the most accurate. The selfie camera is indeed the phone's best selling point. The 8MP wide-angle camera comes in handy for large group selfies.

BATTERY LIFE

With all the photo and video taking, you may be thinking that the battery drains fast. Thanks to its 4300 mAh battery, the Honor 50's battery life lasts for a full day.

I'm indeed surprised given how much I used the phone for photography and videos, and watching videos on YouTube. In between photography and social media updates, I also used Google Map for navigation.

Surprisingly, the battery percentage dropped only slightly.

Gone are the days when I have to carry a powerbank to recharge my phone later in the day.

When it comes to charging the phone, I'm impressed with its fast-charging ability. The 66W Honor wired SuperCharge lets me replenish its power from zero to 70 per cent in just 20 minutes. Constant use does not heat up the phone much and drain battery life.

The Honor 50 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset, improving both CPU and GPU performance by 45 per cent and artificial intelligence processing power by 123 per cent compared with the previous generation.

The Honor 50 comes in two versions. The 6GB RAM + 128GB storage is priced at RM1,699 (in two colour choices: Midnight Black and the limited-edition Honor Code which is only available at official Honor authorised online platforms).

The 8GB RAM + 256GB variant is priced at RM1,999. The colours available are Frost Crystal, Emerald Green and Midnight Black.

VERDICT

The Honor 50 is a good choice given its excellent overall performance, smooth camera function and good battery life. And it doesn't burn a hole in your pocket.
