COLOURFUL devices have always been a pulling factor for consumers. If you’re into devices with vibrant colours, check out the new iPhone XR, which will be available in the market starting tomorrow.
The model will be available in six beautiful new finishes: black, white, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED.
The iPhone XR is the more affordable iPhone among the three models that Apple is offering this time, which are the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR.
With a starting price of RM3,599, this 6.1-inch all-screen phone is slightly bigger that the iPhone XS (5.8 inch), but smaller than the largest iPhone to date, the iPhone XS Max, which comes at 6.5 inch.
The phone sports Apple’s newest processor the A12 Bionic chip (the same chip that powers the iPhone XS), which is Apple’s most powerful chip ever in a smartphone with a next- generation Neural Engine for more advanced machine learning, which is used in everything from photography, gaming to augmented reality.
The chip’s new eight-core design allows it to complete up to 5 trillion operations per second compared to 600 billion in A11 Bionic. This enables new capabilities like faster plane detection for ARKit, fun and expressive Memoji, and Stage Light in camera preview that use real-time machine learning. Core ML is made more powerful on A12 Bionic now with direct access to the Neural Engine, running up to nine times faster at as little as one-tenth the energy as Core ML on A11 Bionic -empowering developers to easily harness this highly efficient machine learning engine while freeing up the GPU for even more advanced graphics.
Beside that, a four-core GPU that is up to 50 percent faster with lossless memory compression brings big gains in graphics performance to games, video editing, and visually demanding apps.
The iPhone XR is splash- and water-resistant rated IP67 and this protects it against everyday spills including coffee, tea and soda.
Display
The new 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display on the iPhone XR is the most advanced LCD in a smartphone, and the most colour accurate in the industry.
The phone feels smooth when held as it’s made with precision-milled glass, advanced pixel masking, and sub-pixel anti-aliasing which let the display follow the curves of the device.
A new backlight design allows the display to extend into the corners, enabling a larger LCD than ever before in iPhone.
In terms of colour accuracy, the iPhone XR wide colour gamut and iOS system wide colour management deliver one of the best colour accuracy in the industry, making everything you see looks true to life.
True Tone
The phone also features True Tone technology, which uses an advanced six-channel ambient light sensor to subtly adjust the white balance onscreen to match the colour temperature of the light around you, and this results in images on the display look as natural as on a printed page, reducing eye strain.
The iPhone XR features the largest LCD ever in an iPhone, yet has a footprint that falls between iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. It also supports fast and fluid iPhone gestures like tap to wake, swipe
up to the Home screen, swipe down to access notifications and the Control Center, and the new haptic touch feature for pressing the Home screen to instantly launch the camera or flashlight.
Camera
The iPhone XR features an innovative single-camera system that integrates the 12MP wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture, ISP, Neural Engine, and advanced algorithms. This is the same wide-angle camera sensor as iPhone XS, with deeper and larger pixels for improved colour fidelity and better low-light photos.
The camera also sports Smart HDR which brings more highlight and shadow detail across your photos. Machine learning, meanwhile, enables Portrait mode, and the all-new Depth Control lets you adjust the depth of field of your portraits after you have taken them. This would give you the flexibility to change the looks of the photos you’ve taken.
The all new sensor in the camera features deeper pixels to improve image fidelity and larger pixels for even better low-light photos. It has more focus pixels for two times faster auto focus. The larger sensor improves video stabilisation and is also twice as fast at reading out images, enabling new features never before possible.
The phone’s Quad-LED True Tone flash delivers improved uniformity of colour across subjects, while the flicker detect sensor improves auto white balance in your image for more true-to-life colour in your photo.
On video, the iPhone XR shoots 4K video with better low-light performance and extended dynamic range in video modes up to 30 fps. It also uses the four built-in mics to record stereo sound. And now, it plays back in wider stereo sound, which makes audio feel even bigger leveraging crosstalk cancellation. Left- and right-channel speakers are matched in output and bandwidth, so the sound stage is wide and balanced. Tuned to maintain clarity so you hear every detail whether watching a movie, listening to music, or playing a game.
Portrait mode
Leveraging the all-new camera sensor, next-generation Neural Engine, and advanced machine learning, iPhone XR introduces Portrait mode using a single-camera system. Portrait mode captures images with depth information for a subject that is sharp and in focus with an artfully blurred background.
And iPhone XR has even more sophisticated and nuanced bokeh, or background blur, for stunning portraits.
For portraiture shots, the camera’s Portrait Lighting uses sophisticated algorithms to calculate how your facial features interact with light. Then it uses that data to create stunning lighting effects. The rear camera supports three lighting effects: Natural, Studio, and Contour.
The 7MP TrueDepth camera delivers advanced Portrait mode with a sophisticated bokeh, background blur, and Depth Control for stunning portraits and Smart HDR.
Portrait Lighting is also available on the front camera using a precise depth map to separate the subject from the background for stunning studio-quality selfies. The TrueDepth camera supports five lighting effects: Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, and Stage Mono.
Face ID
The iPhone XR also features Face ID. It begins with data captured by the TrueDepth camera. Sensors read the unique geometry of your face and compare it to information protected by the Secure Enclave of the A12 Bionic chip. If there’s a match, iPhone XR unlocks. And now it’s even faster.
