IN today’s digital age, we are churning out more data than ever, so much so we are facing problems finding space to store them.

The problem with today’s data is it’s huge, so much bigger than what we had five years ago.

A photo from a 36MP camera can be as big as 30MB while a minute of a 4K video will eat up some 30GB of your storage.

How do you transfer, protect and move these mammoth-sized files easily?

If you’re a pro photographer, for example, you’ll need storage that’s not just big but also very fast in transfering your mega-sized photos and videos to storage.

And if you travel a lot, you need one that is small and rugged.

THE NEXT-GENERATION STORAGE
To cater to the demands of storage-hungry users, WD has come out with the My Passport SSD, which is its first solid state drive (SSD) portable storage.

This new My Passport SSD storage has given new meaning to portable storage in every sense.

Firstly, I was quite surprised by the size of the device, which is far smaller from the conventional portable hard drive that normally comes in palm size.

This one is the size of a matchbox. Yes, you heard me correctly. The weight too has been reduced significantly.

WD has managed to reduce the size to a quarter of the standard portable hard drive due to the use of SSD.

The My Passport SSD measures just 90mmx45mmx10mm. You can easily slip it into your jeans pocket. Now that’s portable.

The drive is built for Mac or PC and is compatible with USB Type-C. Theoretically, this drive will run on 10GB speed.

Included in the box are a Type-C to Type-C cable with a Type-A adapter.

SUPERFAST DRIVE
As for reading and writing speed, this hard drive is blazingly fast. It is, in fact, the fastest WD My Passport drive to date with speeds up to 515MB/s using the USB Type-C port for data transfer. This is about three to four times faster than the non-SSD My Passport drive.

With such speeds, transferring huge files like 4K videos and HD photos should be a breeze.

Using SSD is advantageous to the My Passport SSD as there are no movable parts, allowing it to withstand drops of up to almost 2m.

Another factor that makes this drive special is its security feature. As people keep valuable data in their hard drives, to lose them will be unthinkable.

To address this, WD has included a built-in 256-bit AES Hardware Encryption with WD Security software.

Also included is WD Backup software that makes it easy to automatically backup high-capacity files to your drive or Dropbox cloud service account.

CONCLUSION
If you need a fast, robust drive, get the WD My Passport SSD. The new drive is available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, at RM579, RM1,039 and RM2,099 respectively.
