KUALA LUMPUR: Straits Energy Resources Bhd plans to go on a multi-year reforestation initiative to rehabilitate deteriorated forest areas within the Setiu Wetlands State Park in Terengganu.

According to a statement released today, its 51 per cent-owned subsidiary , Benua Hijau Sdn Bhd, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Management Council of Terengganu State Parks (MPTN) and Setiu Land Office, both entities under the Terengganu State Government for the project.

Benua Hijau intends to plant 100,000 Pokok Gelam trees across 200 acres in a designated area around Tasik Berombak within Setiu Wetlands as part of a five-year reforestation project.

"The reforestation of Tasik Berombak will unlock valuable economic opportunities, through the production of sustainable forest resources, ecotourism, and a local cottage industry."This, in turn, will create job opportunities for locals from the surrounding community," Straits Energy Resources Bhd managing director Datuk Sri Ho Kam Choy said.

Benua Hijau is focused on the development and execution of environmental and social sustainability initiatives.

"This ESG initiative involves taking important action on the ground, which will give us a high level of involvement and visibility into our projects and help us ensure we make a quantifiable positive impact," he continued.

Benua Hijau will actively engage in on-site activities at Setiu Wetlands, freeing up resources for MPTN to allocate to other crucial areas.

The reforestation project aims to align with four United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Reforesting Tasik Berombak aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including protecting life on land (SDG 15), addressing climate change (SDG 13), promoting good health (SDG 3), and fostering economic opportunities (SDG 8).

Covering an expense exceeding 50,000 acres, the Setiu Wetlands comprise riverside forests, freshwater Pokok Gelam swamps, peat swamps, mangroves, brackish water lagoons featuring vegetated sand islands, seagrass beds, and sandy beaches.
