KUALA LUMPUR: The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) has appointed Sunway Group chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah as its new co-patron.

In a statement, the BMCC said that Cheah's appointment underscores the Chamber's commitment to strengthening bilateral trade relations and fostering economic growth between the United Kingdom (UK) and Malaysia.

BMCC Chair Mak Joon Nien highlighted that Cheah's appointment comes at a crucial time as the Chamber expands its initiatives to support businesses navigating the complexities of the modern global market.

Cheah's extensive experience and significant impact on various industries align with the Chamber's mission to enhance business collaboration and economic development between the UK and Malaysia.

Mak also emphasised that Cheah's strategic vision and commitment to sustainable development will significantly bolster the Chamber's efforts in promoting innovation, investment, education, and philanthropic partnerships.

Cheah, a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, founded Sunway Group, one of Southeast Asia's largest conglomerates with interests in real estate, education, healthcare, retail, leisure, and hospitality.

He also established the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia's largest not-for-profit entity advancing education.

Under his leadership, Sunway Group has become a prominent force in the Malaysian economy and a key player on the global stage.

Cheah was recently conferred the honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) by His Majesty King Charles III.

Commenting on his new role, Cheah said he is humbled by the confidence placed in him by BMCC.

"The importance and influence of BMCC reflect the mutual respect, trust, and strong bond of friendship between Malaysia and the UK. I have always believed that to be the best, we must work with the best and learn from the best.

"Malaysia and Sunway have certainly benefited from active partnerships with the very best that the UK has to offer," he said.

Cheah said he looks forward to widening and deepening the close commercial links and strong bonds of friendship between Malaysian and British institutions.
