KUALA LUMPUR: FedEx Express Malaysia will continue to support businesses of all sizes in the country, ranging from multinational corporations (MNCs), local companies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as startups via its vast network and e-commerce solutions.

Particularly within Malaysia's dynamic cross border e-commerce landscape, the company recognises the unique growth potential inherent in the SME community as they navigate the evolving e-commerce ecosystem.

"Even amid changing circumstances, we remain optimistic about the expansion of cross-border commerce, as Malaysian SMEs continue to explore and tap into new markets, and FedEx is ready to support our customers tap into overseas markets with our logistics capabilities and advanced ​​digital tools," FedEx Malaysia managing director Tien Long Woon told Business Times.

The company has introduced customised services that caters to customers purchasing habits that shift with the surge in online shopping.

Among the services that have been updated or launch include FedEx International Economy which offers cost-effective international shipping solutions for both businesses and individuals.

There is also FedEx International Connect Plus, a contractual international, day-definite e-commerce delivery service that balances speed with attractive prices to meet one's global customers' needs and delivers to over 220 countries and territories.

Tien said the company's network capabilities are strategically positioned within key facilities such as its comprehensive logistics hub in Johor which was established in 2019. The hub is a strategic gateway to Singapore.

He also cited FedEx's facility in Batu Kawan, Penang which commenced operations in 2020, providing connectivity to the northern region through both land and air transportation networks.

"These strategically situated facilities play a pivotal role in ensuring efficient and timely transportation. As a result, businesses within Malaysia can experience swift and dependable delivery services, both domestically and internationally.

"We remain steadfast in our commitment to assist local businesses, such as SMEs within Malaysia's major cities and industrial zones in connecting their shipments. Our aim is to create an inclusive environment where business owners feel empowered, not overlooked," said Tien.

Globally, the company is building the "Network for What's Next', aligned with FedEx Corporation's strategic operating principles.

Environmentally-friendly approach

The company is cognisant of its environmental impact in business globally and has taken measures to minimise its overall environmental footprint.

Tien said its approach to sustainability focuses on three key ideas namely reduce, replace and revolutionise.

"We are focused on reducing emissions and waste, replacing older technologies and vehicles, and revolutionising our fleets and facilities.

"This approach enables us to use our resources efficiently and responsibly. We also have some programs to focus on specific areas, which include FedEx Fuel Sense to innovate and look at opportunities to use alternative jet fuel," he said.

Among the changes the company had adopted to be more environmentally-friendly were using less energy in its operations by improving the efficiency of its facilities and reducing its Scope 2 emissions.

It also uses FedEx-branded cardboard packaging which is 100 per cent recyclable and composed of 36 per cent recycled content.

Promoting diversity and gender equality

The company is also committed to promoting diversity and gender equality in the workplace, guided by its people-first philosophy and respect for everyone in its daily business practice.

"As part of our dedication to these values, we have established clear and measurable goals aimed at providing increased opportunities for women in the logistics industry.

"At FedEx Malaysia, we are proud to report an overall female representation of 34 per cent. It's noteworthy that our gender balance varies based on the nature of job roles, and we consistently work towards fostering greater participation by women in all aspects of our organisation," he said.

The company also provides paternity leave entitlement for male employees which underscores its support for fathers during the crucial confinement period.

In line with evolving work dynamics, FedEx has also embraced the hybrid workplace model which has been successfully implemented in several APAC countries, including FedEx Malaysia.

Employees spend two days per week at the office, with one designated as a "collaboration day" to ensure the presence of all team members. The remaining three days offer the flexibility to work from home.
