KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Group posted strong sales with the registration of 41,386 vehicles in August as both UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd and associate company Perodua continue to deliver outstanding orders.  

The group's automotive sales increased 16 per cent to 271,515 units for the first eight months of 2023, from the 233,367 units registered in the same period of 2022. 

UMW Toyota registered stronger monthly sales for the year with the delivery of 10,275 units in August, 13 per cent higher than the 9,091 units delivered in August last year.  

Year-to-date (YTD), UMW Toyota registered 67,283 units, recording a nine per cent growth compared with the 61,639 units registered in the corresponding period of 2022.  

Accordingly, UMW Toyota achieved a market share of 13.4 per cent  YTD.  

The all-new Toyota Vios, Hilux and Corolla Cross were the top-selling models to date.  

UMW Toyota enhanced its product offerings in August with the introduction of an improved 2023 Toyota Corolla as well as Toyota Corolla GR Sport variant.  

It also unveiled the 2023 Lexus RX500h F Sport variant as well as all-new Lexus RX350 in May. 

Meanwhile, Perodua registered 31,111 units in August, 19 per cent higher than the 26,039 units delivered in August 2022, mainly due to the improving supply chain as well as enhancement of production and sales operations.  

Perodua's sales surged to 204,232 units YTD, 19 per cent higher than the 171,728 units delivered in the same period of 2022. 

Accordingly, Perodua achieved a market share of 40.7 per cent for August YTD.  

For the first eight months of 2023, Perodua's top selling models were the Bezza, followed by the Myvi and Axia. 

UMW Holdings Bhd president and group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said the group is encouraged by the sustained strong August sales by both UMW Toyota and Perodua.  

"Year-to-date August 2023, both companies registered higher sales compared with the same period of 2022.  

"The strong sales achieved was driven by the introduction of competitive and exciting new models as well as attractive sales promotions," he said. 

The group is confident that both companies will achieve their sales targets for 2023, based on the outstanding bookings.
