The tourism fraternity in Kudat, Sabah, is hoping that the authorities would expedite road repairs, especially on the stretch heading to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau.

Blue Fin Surf and Dive co-founder Camuel Tsen, 38, said Tanjung Simpang Mengayau was an iconic place for surfing and diving.

“The road leading to the tourist spot has been in bad shape for a long time. Its condition has worsened with the presence of heavy vehicles such as construction lorries and tour buses.

“One side of the two-way road heading to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau has collapsed. This endangers road users.

“It would reflect badly on the tour operators, the tourism industry and the government if tourists, especially foreigners, were involved in accidents.”

ACTIONLINE:

Kudat district officer Sapdin Ibrahim said road maintenance in the district was under the purview of the Public Works Department and Pembinaan Kekal Mewah Sdn Bhd.

He said both parties would be informed of the matter, adding that warning signs would be put up to caution motorists.

“In the long term, the road infrastructure development in Kudat will benefit from the Pan-Borneo Highway project, which includes a stretch from Tuaran to Kudat.
